The problem

Every backpack you’ve ever owned holds its weight a few inches behind your spine.

Your body tries to fix this in the only way it can. Your shoulders move forward, your head pushes out ahead of your chest, and your lower back rounds. Walking forward makes it even worse.

We spend hours each day with our bags on our backs. Why not use something that helps your back instead of hurting it?

Why we built it

We built it because we were tired of choosing.

I carried a laptop to work on an hour-and-a-half commute every day for two years and ended most train rides with tight shoulders and a sore lower back. The “ergonomic” bags I tried added bulk and looked like hiking gear. I wanted the bag I already carry to do the work, keep the features I’m used to, and still look good.

So we started with the back panel and designed a bag around it. Not the other way round.

How it works

Most bags put a flat foam pad against your spine and call it ergonomic. Your spine isn’t flat. Or worse, they have no structure at all. The Align Pack’s panel has three zones, each contoured and padded for the part of your back it touches.

  1. Upper back 10 to 14 mm foam

    A gentle forward curve nudges your shoulders open instead of letting them roll in.

  2. Mid back 8 to 12 mm foam

    A slight relief leaves room for your thoracic spine to move. No pressure where you don’t want it.

  3. Lumbar 15 to 20 mm foam

    The deepest curve and the thickest padding, right where a flat panel leaves a gap and your lower back sags to fill it.

It flexes. It doesn’t fight you.

Under the foam is a thin semi-rigid sheet. Press on it and it gives about half a centimeter, then springs back. It won’t collapse flat like foam alone, and it won’t feel like a plastic board strapped to your back. A center channel keeps air moving so it doesn’t turn sweaty in July.

Straps that pull the right direction.

On a normal bag the straps pull down and back, and your shoulders follow. The Align Pack’s straps work as a system with the back panel, pulling the load toward your body. A chest strap mounted low draws your shoulders slightly back and down. Together, these three parts hold you upright instead of dragging you forward.

Weight where your body can carry it.

The laptop sleeve sits right up against the back panel, so the heaviest thing in your bag is only 2 to 3 cm from your back. Less torque, less leverage on your shoulders, less pull on your lower back, and less of a force trying to tip you over, which means less hunching forward to counteract it. The system is tuned for a 5 to 10 kg load (11 to 22 lbs): a laptop, charger, bottle, and a day’s worth of stuff.

The Align Pack is a backpack, not a medical device. It won’t treat a back condition. It’s designed to encourage an upright carry and remove the forward pull of a conventional pack.

We kept the rest simple on purpose. Fewer things to break, nothing you’ll never use.

Behind the design

What you see on this page is the real bag, not a render.

The design is finished. The full technical package, drawings, measurement sheet, and bill of materials, has been through three full amendment rounds with our manufacturer.

From iteration to iteration we:

  • Resized the whole bag to fit a 16" laptop
  • Lowered the chest strap 4 to 6 inches so it pulls shoulders back instead of sitting at the collarbone
  • Narrowed the shoulder straps by half an inch
  • Enlarged the interior security pocket so a passport fits with room
  • Swapped every buckle and slider from plastic to metal

Where the money goes

The goal covers the first production run. Roughly 70% goes to manufacturing and materials, 15% to packaging and shipping to backers, about 8 to 10% to Kickstarter and payment fees, and the rest is held back for delays or defects. Anything over the goal goes to a larger run first, which brings unit cost down. We’re currently selling at no markup at all.

Why Kickstarter

A first production run has to be big enough to get the unit cost and the metal hardware pricing right. We’d rather build that first batch with people who want the bag than guess at demand. Back us and you get one of the first bags off the line at a price we won’t offer again.

Warranty

Two years against defects in materials and workmanship. If something fails under normal use, we repair or replace it.
